Catch Early, Live Longer.

How’s this for another reason to get screened early and often for breast cancer?

A study was done in the UK that found that more than half (61%) of breast cancers found via regular screening were small, low grade cases that had not spread to the lymph nodes. Tracking these women for 5 years concluded that if these women remain cancer free for five years, they have the same life expectancy as women without cancer. These data were assembled from the Association of Breast Surgery and the National Health Service (NHS) Breast Screening Program.

Another benefit is that greater screening resulted in more women able to have breast-conserving surgery rather than mastectomies.

Do we need any more good reasons to convince our friends, sisters, daughters, mothers, aunts and co-workers to run, not walk, to the nearest mammography center – and to do it every year?
